The Foundling
A period drama shot in native stereo for Philips's Parallel Lines series with RSA Films, on a commercial's schedule. Best 3D Short Film at the 2012 International 3D Society Awards.
What it was
The Foundling was made for Philips's Parallel Lines series, and director Barney Cokeliss took on the challenge of using stereo for a period drama rather than for spectacle. Set in a travelling circus in 1936, it uses depth to draw the audience into the freak shows of the early twentieth century and into the mother-and-son story at the film's centre, and finds a few stereo moments that leap off the screen. The International 3D Society named it Best 3D Short Film at its 2012 awards; Screen Daily reported it praised for its exceptional use of 3D to drive the emotion and story.
Technical approach
Chris Parks supervised the stereo and Melissa Byers was stereographer on set, giving the film the Hollywood 3D quality Barney Cokeliss wanted within the constraints of a fast commercial shoot. Depth gives attention to the detail of the sets and costumes and emotional emphasis to the key moments of the film.
