My Africa

A keeper in green kneeling beside a child at the elephant sanctuary, in My Africa

A stereo 360 film narrated by Lupita Nyong'o, shot on location in northern Kenya and finished in London with every shot treated as a visual effect. Tribeca 2018, AT&T Best 360 Film, Gold Telly.

What it was

My Africa takes the viewer to the rangelands of northern Kenya, where a community is rebuilding the bonds that let people and wildlife coexist. Naltwasha Leripe, a young Samburu woman, guides the film through daily life: tending livestock, digging singing wells into dry riverbanks, and rescuing a baby elephant orphaned by a poacher. Lupita Nyong'o narrates. Made with Conservation International and Passion Planet and directed by David Allen, it was selected for Tribeca in 2018 and won the AT&T Film Award for Best 360 Film and a Gold Telly for Best Use of VR.

Technical approach

Chris Campkin shot on location, mainly on the Insta360 Pro, with bespoke stereo 360 rigs designed for the shots that camera could not take, and was joined by DeepVR for key sequences on the Masai Mara. Post production was in London with every shot treated as a visual effect: VFX by Angus Cameron, Mistika grade by Peter Amies, ambisonic sound design by Roland Heap and Sound Disposition.

In their words

  • The film opens with iconic wildlife scenes: Viewers stand in the midst of a thundering herd of wildebeest migrating across the Mara River, in front of a lioness as she captures her prey, and later, with an inquisitive baby elephant in a community-led sanctuary in northern Kenya.
