Mr Stink
David Walliams's Mr Stink as the BBC's 2012 Christmas special, one of the corporation's terrestrial 3D broadcasts, shot with the 2D version taken from one of the stereo cameras.
What it was
The BBC chose Mr Stink, with its larger-than-life characters, for its 3D trial and broadcast it in stereo on BBC HD in December 2012. The challenge was to keep the level of stereo production Vision3 brings to features within the schedule and budget of a television special, working with children and animals. Directed by Declan Lowney; Chris Parks supervised the stereo with Matthew Smith as stereographer.
Technical approach
Matthew Smith joined at the planning stage, working with the director, the production team and the camera hire house on a workflow quick enough for television. As the BBC's head of 3D noted at the time, it was the first programme in the trial where the 2D and 3D versions were shot at once, with the 2D taken from one of the stereo cameras.
