Jupiter Ascending

The Wachowskis' first film in stereo, designed from early pre-production to match the scale of the CG worlds.

What it was

For their first film in stereo, Lana and Andy Wachowski wanted to go beyond the way 3D was typically used and match the ambition of the story: alien worlds and intergalactic chases. Chris Parks joined very early in pre-production and broke the script down with them into a shot-by-shot depth script. The Shadow Chase through the skyscrapers of Chicago shows how the stereo carries the Wachowskis' action; the quieter scenes give the design and costumes their due.

Technical approach

A true hybrid of 3D techniques. Vision3 worked closely with the VFX department and vendors so that the CG elements, created in fine detail, blended with the conversion Chris had designed and supervised. Stereo supervision by Chris Parks with additional stereography by Angus Cameron; stereo production based out of Vision3.

In their words

  • It may have been shot 'flat' and converted in post-production, but Jupiter Ascending delivers an excellent 3D experience on Warner's Blu-ray.

  • You get a great sense of the extra level of dimension, thanks to how strong of an effort was put into the world-building and how to properly display that in key moments of the film.

  • There is nothing cheesy here with the effects, it just really adds some great depth and the extra dimension works well with the space scenes.

  • the film is long and the CGI is impressive, the 3D works very well, specially n chase and explosion scenes
