Inside the Mind of Leonardo
A feature-length stereo 3D portrait of Leonardo da Vinci for Sky 3D, told in his own words, with his sketches brought off the page in stereo animation.
What it was
Inside the Mind of Leonardo explores the origins of Leonardo's genius through his notebooks, restricting the words to his own, and revisits the Italian places that shaped him. Stereo adds dimension and texture to the earliest sketches and to the locations, and the animated sequences lift drawings from the diaries off the page. Directed by Julian Jones; released theatrically in stereo.
Technical approach
Matthew Smith was stereographer throughout and director of photography for key sequences. The native stereo shoot ran to the methods of a television documentary, so it had to stay mobile and react quickly; Matthew's team built bespoke rigs for the location work. Angus Cameron was post stereographer and VFX supervisor, and supervised the stereo animation of the sketches. Chris Parks supervised the stereo.
