Warner Bros · 2016
The return to the Wizarding World, planned for stereo from early in production with David Yates and David Heyman. Best 3D Film at the 2017 AIS Awards Europe.
What it was
The decision to make the film in stereo was taken very early in production, and Chris Parks and the Vision3 team worked closely with the creative team of the Harry Potter series, above all director David Yates and producer David Heyman, on some of their best stereo sequences to date. The team looked for new ways to bring 1920s New York to life in depth: the detailed locations and production design, the larger-than-life characters and the film's explosive final act. Newt Scamander's suitcase, filled with beasts and wonders, is the sequence most often cited, with stereo used to warp and expand the perception of the space inside while showing the creatures that live there. The film is an example of stereo working as large-scale spectacle for a worldwide audience while also lighting the more delicate and intimate performances at the heart of the story. It won Best 3D Film at the 2017 AIS Awards Europe.
Technical approach
Stereo supervision by Chris Parks with additional stereography by Angus Cameron; stereo production based out of Vision3. The depth plan Chris laid down with David Yates on this film was the one the second film followed.
