Vision3 immersive ocean work
A minute of the ocean work: Drop in the Ocean, Valens Reef and Critical Distance.
Vision3 / Vulcan · 2020
Social AR on HoloLens 2: audiences among the endangered Southern Resident orcas, seeing echolocation as sound in space. Tribeca 2021, made with Microsoft.
What it was
Critical Distance puts the audience in the Salish Sea with Kiki, a five-year-old orca, and her family, J Pod, a group of twenty-two endangered Southern Resident orcas. Through Kiki the experience shows how the pod lives by sound, and how human activity disrupts it. While the pod's fate is uncertain, it ends with hope and with what has to change for Kiki, her family and the water they live in.
Created by Adam May and Chris Campkin for Microsoft's HoloLens 2 (the Tribeca listing names Adam May as project creator and Chris Campkin as key collaborator), it was an official selection of the 2021 Tribeca Film Festival, in partnership with Microsoft.
Since the Smithsonian it has toured Canada: the Canadian Museum of Nature in Ottawa in June 2024, the Manitoba Museum in Winnipeg from June to September 2025, and the Royal BC Museum in Victoria from January to July 2026, where the season opened with it.
Technical approach
A social augmented reality experience on Microsoft's HoloLens 2. Audiences connect with the close-knit family and experience the daily perils facing it, and "see sound": Kiki's world of echolocation, and how human activity disrupts it.
